This has to make you laugh

While feeding three babies three different purees (don't ask), Everett requested that I "vroom" the green beans to Callum's mouth.  The other babies kind of smile for the "vrooming," but this is Callum's reaction:

In which I talk about running

I haven't talked much about running here, but my facebook friends have been bombarded with runkeeper updates for the past ten weeks or so.  Sorry guys!  So now I'll bombard the whole world.  Or those who read my blog.  Who are likely the same people who are my friends on facebook.  Umm...sorry again guys!
In July, I joined a 5K training team intended for those sedentary folks like me who couldn't run 4 minutes without gasping for air.  The team was sponsored by our local outdoor supply store, Solstice Outdoors, and it was a pretty sweet deal.  You paid $20 and for that tiny fee, each participant received: a training plan, a coach, people to run with and keep them accountable, an awesome wicking t-shirt emblazoned with the Solstice logo, and entry into a little 5K race.  If you completed the race, you got some gatorade, a smoothie, and a $20 gift certificate to use at Solstice.  Like I said, sweet deal.  (I bought these super comfy, uber cute shoes with assistance from my gift certificate.)
The best time I'd had before the race had been just over 3 miles at a 8:58 pace.  Since my original goal had been to do the race at under 10:00 miles, I was stoked about this.  Brian said that he was betting I'd be closer to 8:00 miles for the race and I laughed in his face.  That was a week away and he thought I was going to cut off :30 a mile or more!?  Ha.
Well, race day came and I was feeling awesome.  Had some pre-race jitters, but nothing terrible.  And then when we started running, I realized I was going to go faster than most of the others.  So I got in line behind two other girls (who had been way ahead of me in trainings) and kept up with them to the halfway point.  They both stopped to get some water, but since I hadn't been drinking water during my runs, I just kept running.  As a result, I finished the race in 2nd place (behind the son of the high school's cross country coach who was by no means a new runner so he totally doesn't count) at 25 minutes, 24 seconds.  That's an 8:11 pace.  I should really stop doubting what Brian says in regards to running...
Now as my little brother so kindly pointed out, that's still not unbelievably fast.  (Thanks Sam....ya stinker.)  But it was better than I ever could have imagined.  I mean, I was doing over 13:00 miles the first day and literally could not run 4 minutes without feeling like I was dying.
After the race, I decided I could keep going.  So I signed up for the Cruisin' the Corridor 10K a mere four weeks later.  Then I got a nasty cold and didn't run for 6 days.  Luckily, when I did run, I made it to 4 miles.  Then two days later, I got up to 4.25 miles.  All while still keeping my pace under 9:40.  So I have hopes that I'll make it.
Here's the training plan I've concocted (and Brian approved) for the remaining time before the race:
Phew!
I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks for reading (if you actually did read and didn't skim.  If you skimmed, well, thanks anyway.)

My genius child

I've been a little distressed lately because I just can't seem to get Everett to understand colors.  He knows orange and that's about it.  If you ask him what color something is, he'll respond with either green or pink.  I was getting particularly frustrated today while trying to get him to sort crayons by color and finally gave up for another day.
Then tonight, I read this in an email, "If you've been making a list of your 2-year-old's vocabulary, you might now be finding it impossible to keep up. The typical young preschooler picks up new words every single day and will soon be able to string them together in sentences from two to four words long. "
And then, my friends, I literally laughed out loud.  Two to four words long???  Oh geez.  I guess I should get a video clip or transcribe sometime what he says, but the boy never stops talking.  I mean, Brian took him for a 1.5 hour long run the other day and Everett talked the WHOLE time (or so I'm told).  He carries on logical, thought-provoking conversations and asks questions that totally make sense.  Or he tells me, "You take me nana papa's house and I sleep there and I watch pokemon all night."  Granted, he's missing some words and it's kind of a run on, and it involved pokemon..., but it's also a few more than four words.  I kind of love having him around.  My days are never ever lonely.  I've always talked to myself (I also never stop talking...), and when Everett was a baby, I just sort of continued but directed it at him (so much nicer when you're out shopping and can talk to yourself because there's a baby you can pretend you're talking to.).  Now, I'm not one of those parents who believes their kid is a genius.  I'm sure he's probably going to get diagnosed with ADHD at some point... but I am proud of him.  I know other kids are more advanced and kids are less advanced.  Some kids know all their colors.  Some kids can sing.  Some kids are great a coloring/drawing.  Some have great physical prowess.  But my kid?  He can talk.

The boys look like...

Makes me wonder if they ever get other results...

Sick again

Wow, it's kind of been a long time since I posted.  We've been keeping busy (especially with daycare during the day) and I haven't been taking a lot of pictures.  Now, Callum and I have some nasty cold so I'm just popping on to throw on a menu for the week.

Menu for September 19-24
Monday, September 19 - Potato Leek Soup (leeks from the farmer's market!  yay!)
Tuesday, September 20 - Pasties (plus make a whole bunch to freeze for easy dinners)
Wednesday, September 21 - Crock pot chicken spaghetti
Thursday, September 22 - leftovers (I'm pretty worn down by my second day with two extra babies)
Friday, September 23 - crock pot stew
Saturday, September 24 - Mommy and daddy to El Do.  We were going to go this week, but then I got sick..

6 month check up

Callum had his 6 month check up today at 6 months, 1 week and 2 days old.  He weighed in at 18lbs 13.5oz (50-75th %ile), his head was at the 50th %ile, and he wants to be just like big brother and got himself to the 95th %ile for height (about 28").  This explains why I look funny when I hold my children.  They are giants.  :) Callum turned himself red and held his breath when he got his two shots but after some bouncing and consoling, he was totally fine and back to his normal self.  What a brave little guy!  Now he gets a break until flu shot and Hep B at 9 months.

Callum also had a PT appointment today.  His head is finally visibly rounding out!  He was an excellent little patient today and did everything his therapist requested.  He even turned his face bright red trying his hardest to roll over.  And he did it!  I have a feeling that in just a few more days, he's going to be rolling all over the place.  This should be great for helping round his head some more too.

Daycare is going great.  I now watch two little 7 month olds part time.  A girl on T, W, Th and a boy on W, Th, F.  So we're busy!  Callum loves the playmates and Everett loves entertaining the babies and helping out.  He's going to be an excellent daddy someday.  After the appointments today, our little girl came over and we all took at walk to the library and park.  Everett is so speedy on his balance bike now that I have to jog every few steps to keep up with him.  We've decided that we're going to try and get him a tiny pedal bike this fall.  He totally has the balance thing down now and we think it's time to add in pedaling.  He's going to be a biking prodigy.  :)

Well, it's time for diaper changes and a bottle!
