8 months old
Callum turned 8 months old yesterday and I'm still rubbing my eyes in disbelief. The time is still absolutely flying by. Here are some little bits of what it's like to be 8 month old Cally.
-He crawls like a maniac. He went from testing the waters of being on his hands and knees to speed crawling all over creation in a matter of hours. He's nuts. He's starting to figure out stairs too.
-He pulls to stand on everything (what is with this kid?!?) and gets into stuff he shouldn't. I think some of this crazy mobile behavior can be blamed on another daycare baby who's a month older and apparently peer pressured him into pulling these stunts.
-He eats everything. Seriously. You put anything in front of him and he WILL eat it. Yesterday, he was nomming on baked potato and vegetarian chili. Today, he had some cut up grapes. Texture is no issue for this one. I have to remind myself to nurse him or I think he'd just nurse at night and eat solids all day.
-Speaking of night, Callum is still relishing the good life, sleeping snuggled up to me. He naps in his crib during the day and will usually go down for the night in his crib, but once he needs to nurse at night, he's snuggled. He nurses several times at night, which keeps me happy that he's maintaining his milk supply and reinforcing birth control. And I like it.
-He's enormous. Somewhere around 21/22 lbs and about 29"
-He adores his brother. He speed crawls into Everett's room whenever we're upstairs. Might have something to do with the books and duplos covering the floor....but he loves his brother too. No one can make him laugh like his big brother can. I can only shake my head and widen my eyes thinking about a few months from now when Callum will be able to attempt to keep up with Everett.
-He still loves being worn. Whenever we go somewhere with the whole daycare crew, the other two babies are in the stroller, Everett's on his scoot, and Callum gets snuggled up into the Ergo. He usually either A. turns his head back and forth as he watches cars or B. zonks out. There are still the rare times too when he's too tired to fall asleep and I have to pop him up on my back until he crashes and then put him in his crib.
-Still no teeth. But teething.
-He can finally ROLL! lol. It only took learning to crawl to figure out the whole rolling thing. Weirdo.
-He really hates when daddy walks by him without scooping him up for snuggles. He will crawl after Brian, wailing, until he gets his attention.
-He's our little ball of sunshine and snuggle muffin. Everett could never sit still long enough to truly snuggle, but Callum is perfectly content to be in a lap with hugs and kisses.
They're starting to look a bit different. And the eyes. HA! Brown. :)

Lying in bed musing
Written on my phone the other night:
when did my baby become "not a baby anymore?" I've been realizing this for some time, especially since time appears to literally fly with the second child, but tonight it wad undeniable. I hefted this lug of a baby onto my tummy after nursing and it occurred to me that he's not very little anymore. In fact, he's really big. He's heavy and long and he has non-baby hair and he can crawl and says ba-ba-ba all day long and and and... He doesn't really want to be a baby either and that just makes it that much worse. He thinks he's such hot stuff following his big brother around the house and eating everything he can get his chubby little hands on. So I snuggle him. Every opportunity he'll give me. It gets hard sometimes with the daycare babies because I feel like I don't have quite enough time to savor my baby on the few baby-ish moments he has left, but c'est la vie, eh?

Everett-isms again
Brian: "The rags got yucky." Everett: "That happens, Daddy."
Everett: "I'm putting my bear in time out, mama." Me: "why?" Everett: "Cause he hit sock monkey."
Everett: (pointing to a picture of a leopard in a book) "What's that?" Brian: "That's a leopard." Everett: "No it's not! It's a JAGUAR!"
Everett: "Look! An airplane! It's way high up in the sky. I wanna go in it. And then we'll go to the airport. And then we walk off the plane. And then we walk and walk. And then we get GUMMY WORMS!" (A fairly accurate recollection of our trip to Ohio this summer.)

My first "real" race
This (quite chilly) morning, I completed my first "real" race. Like, not a training team run and it had real timing chips and everything. :)
It couldn't have been a more beautiful morning for a 10K run. I got to watch the sunrise, see the beautiful colors on the trees, it was just the right temperature to wear tights, my zoot, headband and gloves and start to get a bit warm toward the end. My goal for the race was to keep my pace under 9:00 miles and I am very proud to say that I made it! In fact, my average was 8:33! At first I did my math wrong and thought I had averaged 8:58 and was kind of sad until my husband the engineer did his math right and made me smack my forehead. How did I graduate from college? :)
I probably could have pushed it a bit more, but I didn't want to push too hard and end up feeling like crud afterward or feeling like I had to throw up or anything like that. I think I must have paced it just right because I am totally motivated to go for the half-marathon next year! Who knows, maybe my hubby would even run WITH me instead of trying to PR it.....yeah right.
Auntie J and Uncle J stayed overnight and got up early with the boys, made them pancakes (!), and strolled them down to the finish line for me. Seeing my little boy with his stegosaurus hat waving to me at the end was just what I needed and I flew into the finish! Seriously. I was down to like 5:00 miles at the very very end (for like 10 seconds).
We went home so I could change and feed Callum then walked down to get a Black Cat coffee and check out the awards back at the finish. Now we're home again for lunch and a rest and then it's back to the civic center for Everett's race, The Little Engine that Could Toddler Run, at 2. Phew! Then I think we'll go OUT to dinner because I don't feel like cooking. :)

Everett the pretender
Everett has learned how to pretend. I mean, really pretend. He's known how to pretend to eat play food, be a monster, etc. for a long time, but yesterday was something beyond that. He was pretending to drive his car downtown to go buy gum (a bit of an obsession at the moment) then bringing the "gum" back to me to chew on. He would then think of a new location (wal-mart, the co-op, county market, mcdonalds) and ask me which direction to go. If I actually pointed out the literal direction of said locations, he would say, "NO! It not that way!" Sorry? It was hilarious. I remember the days of pretending fondly and hope he has a nice long run of living in an imaginary world all from his own creation.
Oh, and some more awesome sayings lately.
E: "I don't like mooses!" Me: "why not?" E: "They could step on me." Me: "Good point."
Brian: "Bye, Everett!" E: "Where you goin'?" B: "To the woods." E: "Oh. You find wolf-es. I no like wolf-es. I scary wolf-es."
E: "I wan watch baby eyening spying time." Yeah, just try and guess that one.... (baby signing time)

Busy week meal plan
I say it's going to be a busy week, but really, last week was crazy. And yes, I know I haven't done a meal plan in ages, but shush. Last week, I had a full daycare ALL week. That means two extra babies every work day from about 7:45-5. Oh, and Brian was gone from 6 AM Tuesday morning until around 10:30 PM Thursday night. PHEW!
This week, I only have full daycare M, W, Th, half of Tuesday, and one extra baby on Friday. BUT Brian will be gone for a wedding from Wednesday through Sunday. Oh, and I'm running my first 10K on Saturday. Riiiight.
So here's the meal plan!

Everett-isms
Just a sampling from the past few days.
"Wonder Pets share celery. Maybe I go in t.v. and share celery with Wonder Pets!"
"I not very good at tinker toys." (That one nearly broke my heart!)
"Oh my! Goodness gracious! Sakes alive! Holy cow! Big one!" (saw an excavator working up close)
"I watch a little bit of t.v. please?"
"They're playing football? Oh, I LIKE football! Maybe I play with them. They squish me?"
Me: "Guess what." Everett: "orange!" Me: "orange???" Everett: "we have some orange." (He was apparently still thinking about what he wanted for a snack and I had moved on...)
(To Brian) "I like bein with you. With no one else."
(To a daycare baby) "You crawled! Hooray! Good job!"
"This sharp?" Me: "yes, so you shouldn't really touch it." (orange peeler) Everett: "I be really careful."
"You singin backyard?!?" Me: "umm...yes." E: "WHY!? It stuck in your head?"
"I need some snuggles" (as he lies down on my lap)

Growing before my eyes
When Everett was a baby, it seemed like his clothes got tighter and smaller day by day until I would finally pack them up and put them away, pulling out the stash of the next size's clothes. This is not the case with Callum. I think he saves up all his growth spurt time and piles it into a few hours, or maaaybe a day. I can think of more than one occasion when I've looked at him and thought, "you are bigger than you were yesterday!" It's like he's one size, takes a nice long nap, wakes up and has grown two inches and two pounds. The most recent event occurred Thursday night as I had flopped him onto my belly to burp him during his bedtime nursing. With his head tucked under my chin, I realized that his feet were down at my thighs. And they so hadn't been the night before. That, and he was heavy. He's up at around 20 lbs now and boy can I tell when I have him perched on my hip because leaving him on the floor with his toys is apparently equated in his mind to abandoning him on a cold dark street in the middle of an unknown city.
Maybe it's that I'm more keenly aware that he is growing too fast, or maybe he grows at the speed of light. You never know... This horrible concept of my baby "growing" was only intensified yesterday when I was watching the tiniest, cutest little nearly 5 month old girl. She was just the cutest little peanut and couldn't have weighed 15lbs. I picked her up and nearly threw her to the ceiling. I'm so used to lugging these enormous 7-8 month olds all day (and the occasional nearly 3 year old who is half my size).
Since my almighty super mom powers apparently do not extend into the "restriction of growing up/getting bigger" field, I guess I just have to deal with this and make sure to snuggle and kiss every squishy baby cheek, downy baby hair, and rolly baby body while I have the chance. That, and whisper to my boys: "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always. As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be." (Robert Munsch)
